note for English listeners:
the topic is easy aspect of music created by improvisers, experimental musicians and avant-garde composers.
track 1 & 2: in 2005 London based composer, shakuhachi player and music cretic Clive Bell was invited by British Council to Beijing for Sound And The City project. He selected some mega hits songs and re-arranged them. Then made 1000 copies of CD to give away in small shops in Beijing. improviser Lol Coxhill’s voice is a bit rare, compare to his great fame on saxophone.
track 3 & 4: Phil Minton is one of the most creative voice improviser. It’s a real pleasure to discover his contribution on rock.
track 5 & 6: Miki Sawaguchi is a Japanese AV actress. That’s why there is track 6, her professional voice performance.
track 7: the melody was derived from The Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields Forever”. Alvin Lucier wrote this for pianist Aki Takahashi’s request. He lets her choosen a song. Then she find “nothing is real” from this song which looks fit Lucier’s music. The piano playing was recorded then played back through a small speaker placed in a tea pot.
track 8 – 12: another side of Berlin’s improvised music scene. Here focus on Kai Fagashinski, axel dörner and Nicholas Bussmann.
track 13 & 14: Simon Berz is a Swiss improviser… however, this is still improvised music.
track 15 & 16: arranged and guitar played by Otomo Yoshihide. Track 16 is a cover version of Nobuyasu Okabayashi’s famous song which was popular during Japan’s students movement in early 1970’s.
track 17: Wang Fan is one of the first few music experimentalists of China. He is also a unique song writer and singer (not singer & song writer).
track 18: Ronez aka Zhou Pei is known by hardware noise.
track 19: Tats Lau is one of the most successful popular stars in Hong Kong. Maybe next time I do a topic of Radio Enemy as Strange Aspect of Popular Music...
